The Rivers State Ministry of Health has arrested four suspects over alleged medical quackery and shut down eight health facilities during an inspection exercise in Port Harcourt.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Vincent Wachukwu, said the enforcement operation was part of efforts to protect residents from unsafe medical practices and ensure that healthcare providers comply with approved standards.
According to the ministry, the inspection uncovered facilities allegedly operating without proper registration or failing to meet required healthcare regulations.
One of the facilities was reportedly operating secretly inside a residential compound on Victoria Street in Port Harcourt. Two suspects were arrested during the operation at the location.
The ministry also raised concerns over an alleged case involving a thyroidectomy performed on a patient by individuals suspected of lacking the necessary qualifications.
The state government said the exercise was aimed at identifying illegal medical operators and preventing residents from receiving treatment from unqualified practitioners.
The ministry’s action highlights the need for stricter monitoring of healthcare facilities and greater public awareness about the importance of seeking medical attention from properly registered professionals.
Residents have been urged to verify the registration and credentials of healthcare providers before undergoing medical procedures.
