The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged illegal possession and manufacture of firearms in Misau Local Government Area, alongside another suspect accused of raping a mentally ill woman in Gamawa LGA.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, on September 26, 2026.
Habib said officers from the Misau Divisional Police Headquarters, while carrying out court duty at Chief Magistrate Court 1, Misau, on September 25, arrested 30-year-old Abubakar Ahmad, popularly known as Tino. He was allegedly found carrying a locally fabricated pistol loaded with a live cartridge.
According to the police spokesman, preliminary investigations indicated that Ahmad was allegedly attempting to deliver the firearm to 35-year-old Tijjani Yakubu, who was already being held at a correctional facility over allegations of criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.
Habib said Yakubu allegedly admitted ownership of the pistol and told investigators that he had given it to Ahmad for safekeeping.
Further investigation reportedly led police to 48-year-old Bappah Kawu, a welder from Tashar Masu in Misau, who was subsequently arrested. Kawu allegedly confessed to fabricating the pistol and selling it to Yakubu for ₦30,000.
Police officers who searched Kawu’s workshop reportedly recovered two locally fabricated Dane guns and several items suspected to have been used in firearm production, including a hacksaw, files and long iron pipes.
The three suspects remain in police custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi, for further investigation.
Suspected Rape
In a separate incident, the police arrested 26-year-old Lukman Alhaji Nasiru, a resident of Garin Malam Village in Gamawa LGA, over the alleged rape of a 50-year-old woman whom police described as mentally ill.
The command said the woman’s 40-year-old younger brother, who is from Gauya Village in Jakusko LGA of Yobe State, reported the alleged incident at the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters on September 25.
According to the report, Nasiru allegedly lured the woman to an area on the outskirts of Garin Malam on September 22, where he allegedly had non-consensual sexual intercourse with her.
Following the report, the suspect was arrested, while both the woman and Nasiru were taken to General Hospital, Gamawa, for medical examination.
The police said investigations into the allegation are still ongoing.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling illegal firearm possession, firearm manufacturing and sexual offences.
He also appealed to residents to provide the police with timely and reliable information that could help prevent crime and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
