IGP Disu Visits Fubara, Promises Stronger Police Collaboration in Rivers

PORT HARCOURT, October 14, 2026 — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to working closely with the Rivers State Government to strengthen security, maintain law and order, and protect lives and property across the state.

Disu gave the assurance on Tuesday, October 13, during a courtesy visit to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at Government House in Port Harcourt.

The visit provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss cooperation between the police and the state government in addressing security challenges and promoting peace and public safety.

According to a statement from the Nigeria Police Force, the engagement was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the two institutions and improving coordination among security agencies and government authorities.

Fubara Praises IGP’s Professionalism

Speaking during the visit, Governor Fubara commended Disu for his professionalism and commitment to duty during his previous assignment as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State in 2024.

The governor recalled that Disu served in the state during a period of intense political tension but continued to discharge his responsibilities.

Fubara expressed happiness at the police chief’s return to Rivers State in a higher capacity, describing his previous service as an example of professionalism and dedication.

He encouraged security personnel to remain impartial, resist undue influence and perform their constitutional duties without fear or favour.

The governor also wished Disu success in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Fubara assured the Inspector-General of the state government’s continued cooperation with the police and other security agencies to maintain peace and protect residents.

Disu Calls for Government-Security Cooperation

In his response, Disu expressed appreciation to the governor and the people of Rivers State for the cooperation and support extended to security agencies during his previous tenure in the state.

The police chief stressed that effective policing depends on collaboration between law enforcement agencies, government authorities and other stakeholders.

He reaffirmed the Force’s determination to work with the Rivers State Government to safeguard lives and property, maintain public order and promote peaceful coexistence.

Disu’s visit also marked a return to a state where he previously served as Commissioner of Police in 2024.

The engagement underscored the importance of sustained institutional cooperation in addressing security concerns and ensuring the safety of residents across Rivers State.

Visit Linked to Book Launch

The Inspector-General was also in Port Harcourt to attend the launch of a book by retired senior police officer Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga, formerly known as Opuiyo.

Okuyiga was among the pioneering women who joined the Nigeria Police Force and later rose through the ranks during her career.

Her memoir, Origin of Policewomen in Nigeria and My Journey in the Nigeria Police Force (1955–1986), documents her experiences and the development of women’s participation in the country’s police service.

Disu acknowledged her contribution to the history of policing in Nigeria and described her as an important figure in the institution’s development.

The book launch brought together police officials and other stakeholders to recognise her service and contribution to the force.

Focus on Security Ahead of 2027 Elections

The visit comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, a period during which security agencies are expected to provide protection for voters, electoral officials and political participants.

The governor’s call for impartiality also highlighted the importance of professional conduct by security personnel during politically sensitive periods.

Although the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both parties to cooperation, the effectiveness of the engagement will depend on the practical steps taken to address security concerns and maintain public confidence.

Residents and other stakeholders will be looking to the police and the state government to sustain their collaboration and ensure that communities across Rivers State remain safe.
