Residents Flee as Suspected Oil Explosion Rocks Eleme in Rivers State

Residents of Eleme Local Government Area in Rivers State reportedly fled their communities following an explosion suspected to be linked to oil-related operations in the area.

The incident was reported on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in the Alode-Aleto area of Eleme, which hosts major industrial facilities, including the Port Harcourt refineries and Indorama Petrochemicals.

BusinessDay reported that residents witnessed an unusual plume of grey, dust-like material rising into the air following the explosion.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) said its volunteers visited the affected area and confirmed that an explosion had occurred.

The organisation’s executive director, Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, said the incident was being investigated, while equipment failure was among the possible explanations being considered.

The report also noted that the area had experienced concerns over interference with oil infrastructure.

The incident reportedly caused alarm among residents, with reports that some people fled their homes and others required hospital treatment. The full extent of the injuries and damage was not established in the report.

The explosion has renewed concerns about the safety of industrial and oil-related operations in Rivers State, where communities live close to major energy facilities.

Residents and environmental advocates are expected to seek clarification from the relevant authorities on the cause of the incident and measures to prevent similar occurrences.
