The Rivers State House of Assembly has moved to assess the impact of flooding in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas following reports of damage to homes, roads and residents’ livelihoods.
The decision was reached after lawmakers expressed concern over the worsening situation and the difficulties faced by residents in affected communities.
During the inspection, the lawmakers visited flooded areas and listened to residents describe the challenges they were experiencing. Some roads had reportedly become inaccessible, while several families were affected by the rising water.
The Speaker of the House, Martin Chike Amaewhule, said the inspection was necessary to understand the scale of the problem and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.
The Assembly also raised concerns about blocked drainage channels and neglected canals, which may have contributed to flooding in some locations.
The lawmakers called for appropriate measures to improve drainage and reduce the risk of further damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
The development has renewed calls for effective flood management and better maintenance of drainage systems across Port Harcourt and neighbouring communities.
