Dangote Refinery Extends $1.6 Billion IPO by Two Weeks

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has extended its initial public offering (IPO) by two weeks, giving prospective investors additional time to participate in the share sale.
According to a report published by Reuters on October 12, 2026, the offer will now close on October 27, 2026, instead of October 13, following approval from Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission. The extension comes amid reported investor interest and efforts to widen participation across Africa. The refinery, owned by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote, is seeking to broaden ownership of its industrial operations by attracting as many as 10 million retail investors in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.
The share sale is expected to raise approximately $1.6 billion, with the potential to reach $2.1 billion if an additional share-allocation option is exercised. The funds are intended to support the refinery’s expansion plans.
The refinery has a stated processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day and began operations in early 2024. It is an important part of Nigeria’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products and strengthen domestic refining capacity.
The extension also gives potential investors more time to complete account-opening procedures, identity verification and other regulatory requirements.
Why this matters to Nigeria
The development could have implications for Nigeria’s capital market, energy sector and wider economy. Broader local ownership may allow more Nigerians to participate in a major industrial project, while the refinery’s expansion could support the country’s ambition to increase domestic fuel production.
However, the eventual outcome will depend on investor participation, the refinery’s performance and how effectively the funds raised are used.
