IGP Tunji Disu Warns Politicians Against Violence Ahead of 2027 General Elections

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has cautioned politicians and other political stakeholders against engaging in violence or any actions capable of undermining preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The police chief emphasized that peaceful political participation, respect for the rule of law, and responsible conduct by all political actors are essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring credible elections.

According to the IGP, the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the elections. He warned that security agencies would not tolerate acts of political thuggery, intimidation, voter suppression, or any form of violence that could threaten public safety or the integrity of the electoral process.

Tunji Disu urged political parties, candidates, supporters, and other stakeholders to place the nation’s interest above personal or partisan ambitions by promoting peaceful campaigns and resolving disputes through lawful and democratic means.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to working with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations, and community leaders to ensure that the 2027 general elections are conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, and secure environment.

The call comes as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum across the country, with security agencies stressing the importance of early measures to prevent election-related violence.
